Oi Amy!

DISCLAIMER: At no point in this blog I am comparing myself self to one of the greatest musical icons that ever existed.

Some of you may or may not know that I work part-time in a pub. Plenty of punters try to be friendly and make conversation, but the amount of times I hear, “Oi Amy!” or “They tried to make me go to Rehab…”. I’m gonna take a guess and say it’s the hair…

Every interview I do, I am always asked about her. I was interviewed by Essex TV once, and the interviewer not only had no memory left on his camera to actually film (like a true professional), but he also started the interview by saying, “Wow…you’re just like an Amy Winehouse rip off”. No artist wants to hear that. I made my excuses and left.

I completely admire the immense talent that Amy had and I am extremely humbled that some people remark that I remind them of her. She was an absolute one-of-a-kind and was in her own league. There’s definitely similarities as we were inspired by the same era. But I’d just like to confirm, no I am not an Amy tribute act. Actually, whilst Amy and I shared a love of jazz and soul, there are equally some singers that inspired her that I do not like, and likewise, there would be some artists that I love that she is on record stating that she did not like.

The story of Amy Winehouse is beautifully tragic and her unfortunate demise left such a hole in the music industry, music lovers and media are desperate to try and fill that void. There will never be another like her, you can’t get a better Amy than Amy. Her shoes are extremely big shoes to fill, and at this early point in my career, whilst I find being likened to her a huge compliment, I would never even attempt to be her, all I can do is be myself.

I love big hair and old music much like her. But my tunes are not as intense as Amy’s. She was very urban and cool, I’m a bit more theatrical and camp. In fact my style is very lighthearted, sometimes sarcastic. I just love fun music.

But I did love Amy. I’ll tell you what, have a listen to my tunes and see what you think…
